Georgia hopefuls promise party gains as Gen. A. H. Colquitt draws Burke county support and ex Gov Johnson faces pressure to withdraw. Reports of highwaymen, burglaries, a Hamburg constable slain, and a fatal shooting after a robbery attempt color a tense political and crime scene across Augusta and nearby towns.
The Senate adjourned after a mark of respect for the late Senator Caperton of West Virginia. The House passed resolutions and adjourned, while reports from Washington note barbs on the Resumption Act and a looming debate over West Point funding. A Bristol dispatch reports Flying Dutchman, a fast train, ran off tracks between Taunton and Bristol. The engine and fireman were killed and many passengers feared dead as the wrecked train was described as total. Police say two passengers dead and numerous injured. The event follows other alerts from London and Havana on July 27.
