Topeka July 25 United States Senator Bristow charged that Senator Aldrich forced higher cotton tariff schedules to bolster the stock market. He accused the increases of aiding stock gamblers and speculators, not protection for legitimate manufacturers, citing 1909 stock issuance totals and testimony from Cotton Manufacturers Association officials. Bristow criticized woolen duties as excessive and opposed reducing them, arguing it would boost imports and ship more cotton products abroad.
