Goshen Indiana July 14 Irene Canning identified as Kate Canning a young book agent of East Barre Vermont. She left East Barre last winter and broke down when asked to confirm her name. Washington July 22 The president announced four diplomatic appointments including Richard L Sprague consul at Gibraltar Edward A Creevey commercial consul at Glauchau Samuel Smith consul at Moscow and Reynolds Hitt third secretary at the US embassy in Paris.
Washington reports a dispatch from Pekin that China has adopted a plan to amortize bonds starting in 1902 to liquidate an indemnity of 450,000,000 taels plus 4 percent interest. Annual payments of about 23,000,000 taels will come from salt tax, maritime customs, and likin tax, with bonds distributed among the powers.
Washington reports on manufacturing in Arizona New Mexico Indian Territory and Oklahoma for 1900. Arizona leads with 21 million in output including cowper shelters earnings. New Mexico 5.6 million. Batavia Ohio July 2 Mrs Annie Bleher of Cincinnati is jailed by Judge Parrott after calling him a liar in open court. She sought a divorce from August Bleher of New Richmond. the court had previously ordered the child split monthly between parents. She promised to return the child on a set date but refused when asked. Her reply to the judge's question about agreeing to give up the child was You are a Har. She will remain jailed until she retracts, which she says she will never do.
Harry Williams, a colored bell boy, was arrested in New York for stealing diamonds and jewelry valued at $2,000 from a woman guest from Georgia at the Long Beach hotel on Saturday. The woman's name is withheld.
New York July 22 The United States general appraisers sustained a protest against a 45 percent ad valorem duty on cylinders with French song records used in phonographs. The board held phonographs reproduce sounds as machines, not as musical instruments, so they are not subject to musical instrument tariffs.
Milwaukee July 22 trains and steamers brought about 15000 Hiks to the city for the opening day of the convention. The main topic is the election of the next grand exalted ruler with supporters of Charles Pickett of Iowa and Judge John C. Nethaway of Minnesota claiming victory for their candidate.

James Holland, thirty five, well known in Pine Bluff Arkansas, died of sunstroke this afternoon after collapsing while walking home. He was carried to his house on a cot and died there. He was a grandson of General James Yell, famed soldier in the Mexican War and Pine Bluff pioneer.

In Elking West Virginia a mob lynched William Brooks after a confrontation with Chief of Police Robert Lilly. Lilly died from a bullet wound suffered during the struggle as Brooks fired from within a house. Brooks was captured, then seized by a mob near the city park and hanged from a tree. Lilly died of his wounds.
Mayor Hugh O'Hara of San Paulo California was fatally shot by Union Well Supply employee Charles Waxsmith as he tried to quell a street brawl. The town erupted in turmoil with 900 citizens in an angry meeting and swift arrests of four machinists for fighting with a Mexican.
Cleveland July 22 George A Groot active in promoting an independent democratic state convention says Bryan’s letter did not deter the movement. He asserts Bryan did not disapprove and plans proceed for the bolt convention in Columbus on July 1st with a large turnout anticipated and a preliminary meeting to appoint temporary officers.
