Wilkesbarre Pennsylvania July 16 Nine hundred firemen in the Firemen’s Association of Pennsylvania refused to report for duty to win an eight hour day. The walkout disrupted northern anthracite mines, idling about 20,000 workers as coal operators split between concessions and refusals. Engineers and foremen faced pressure as the strike spread from Pittston to Shickshinny with layoffs in large and small companies.

Poison tragedy hits two actresses in London
Ida and Edith Yooland, aged twenty six and twenty one, were found dead after taking poison in their rooms in London. Edith alerted their landlady to the act and requested a cab to take them away.
