Convict East Recaptured After Escape From Federal Prison

R. H. East, convict No. 2, who fled the federal prison over five months ago, is back in custody to resume his fifteen year sentence. He arrived from Birmingham at 10 15 under guard, worn and gaunt, wearing ill fitting clothes and a black felt hat. Officers Petty and Nye traveled with East to the prison, facing possible resistance as East warned if captured both he and others would go feet first. East had eluded capture after an earlier June 9 escape aided by a partner, leading to a chase through Alabama and Mississippi involving a Brandon hotel keeper, a farmer at a river crossing, and a Jackson jail where his alias Hank East surfaced. Sheriff Crook and Senator Laurin aided identification by ear measurement and caliper checks matching earlier 1900 Columbus records. The case ties to warrants for horse theft in Alabama and Mississippi being deferred due to East’s return to custody.
