A collision between two trains sends sixteen people to the afterlife with many more hurt. Authorities investigate the crash as rescuers rush to aid the injured and secure the site. The tragedy shocks the region and prompts questions about railway safety and emergency response.
Kansas City July 10 Sixteen dead and many injured after a head on crash between passenger and freight trains on the Chicago and Alton near Norton Missouri. Deaths include Daniel M. Anna conductor and P. J. Anderson engineer. Among the injured are Sydney Jones and others hospitalized in Kansas City and St Joseph. The wreck, blamed on missed signal, destroyed engines and cars, with many scalds from escaping steam.
In Reno and Lawton Oklahoma, officials opened registration for 13000 Kiowa Comanche country homesteads following McKinley’s settlement proclamation. By 9 a.m. crowds formed, lines grew amid heat and tension, and women received a separate booth. Lawton saw similar scenes as El Reno, with 4018 registrations reported at El Reno and 7193 more expected daily.
Milwaukee July 10 unionizing of school teachers to champion labor was urged by Mayor Agar of Fairbury Illinois at the national Glass Bottle Blowers convention. The report says textbooks misrepresent labor and calls for three aims: use union labeled texts, advocate textbooks reflecting labor perspectives, and raise teachers wages.
Eight table cloth companies form the Standard Table Oil Cloth Company under New Jersey laws with capital stock of ten million dollars. Youngstown capitalists underwrite the issue, eight firms join to create the likely headquarters city. A Newfoundland schooner Burin rescued two crew members after the American vessel Wynonia was sunk by an inkrown steamer.
About two hundred Dowie adherents led by Elder Pipe tried to hold a meeting in Evanston, drawing a crowd of 3600. Police and a four inch water stream broke the confrontation. dozens were arrested, and Dowie supporters vow to return amid renewed hostility between town residents and the Dowlettes.
John Casteau of New Albany was found dead on Joseph Turner's farm three miles from town. Turner says Casteau came to the Turner home late last night and attempted to abduct Mrs Turner, prompting Turner to fire in defense. Turner surrendered to the police. the couple returned inside and believed no serious incident occurred until Casteau's body was discovered this morning.
Fort Wayne July 10 Investigations by police reveal Charles Dunn rich elder in the village is accused of killing Alice Cottrell of Huntertown. Dunn's body found in his barn and hidden in sawdust before being thrown into a cistern under his house. Dunn’s hired man Burt Reed and domestic Marie Sampleton of Chicago held as witnesses, not accomplices. funeral postponed for further inquiry.
Dallas July 10 Dudley G Wooten of Dallas today was nominated by the democrats of the sixth congressional district for the seat in congress made vacant by the death of Judge R B Burke. The convention was in session a week and his nomination was made on the 40th ballot. He is 42, UVa Law School 78, an orator of state and national note who opposed party reorganization and aligned with the Chicago and Kansas City platforms.
A party led by Senator Bacon of Georgia, with Representatives DeArmond Mercer Gaines Weeks Joy and others, sailed from Brooklyn aboard the U S transport McClelland to Manila. The trip aims to study Philippines, China, Korea and Japan, with Bacon seeking firsthand knowledge for future foreign relations work. He plans to return in December, each member covering their own expenses.
