Aboard the propeller St Clair Captain Robt Rhyness leaves Duluth for Ontonagon with eighteen passengers and a crew of sixteen. A fire breaks out fourteen miles from port. only one lifeboat launches and is swamped as passengers try for a yawl. All but one passenger perish along with ten crew. The saved include Captain Rhyness and four others. Tugs search for bodies as the cargo, cattle and flour, burns.
