Cotton market review in New York week ending July
The New York cotton market saw little dramatic movement last week with firm tendency and higher weekly prices. Weather across the belt delayed planting, with heavy rains in the Mississippis and Carolinas and dry heat in the southwest reducing crop hopes to under 52.5 million bales. Weevils grow in Mississippi and parts of Texas as lagging eastern belt conditions threaten abandonment of fields if rains continue, while New Orleans bulls hold and August short interest appears sizable. Liverpool and the South leaned selling, and sea Island markets reported subdued activity with modest receipts and stock. Cotton seed oil futures gained modestly amid firmer near term buying. Liverpool weekly statistics showed mixed imports and large stock but rising English spinners demand.

Week's Trade Reviewed in Hester's Cotton Statement
Hester's weekly report notes quiet wholesale trade due to midsummer and holidays, with retail activity stronger from favorable weather. It cites slower industrial demand, midyear shutdowns, and mixed freight in iron and steel, cottons, woolens, and coal milling, alongside rising cereal and cotton prices and declines in some sectors.
