Factories Unshaken by Democratic Tariff Say Secretary
Washington July 7 Foreign manufacturers shipped into the United States only 8.8 percent more finished products under the new tariff than under the old, Secretary Redfield said, arguing there is no ground for alarm that American factories will lose business. Imports of foodstuffs rose sharply while finished manufactures exports fell, with overall eight month trade showing a net drop in exports and a small rise in imports. Redfield attributed declines to a world wide low mood in commerce and crops shortages, noting improving crop prospects may reverse the trend.
