Duty bills and protectionist tariffs face House debate
The House delayed full consideration after a report by Chairman Fourdhney urged protecting American industry without burdening consumers. The dye and chemical schedules drew strongest attack from Frear, who warned the dye monopoly would control many factories and limit competition. The committee advocated American valuation to curb under valuation and argued duties should reflect domestic value. The bill, including petroleum duties and a general free list for most woods, aims to balance protection with export considerations and industry needs.
