Rockefeller faces mounting legal scrutiny as authorities move to enforce actions linked to his past business dealings. The case centers on alleged improprieties and potential breaches of fiduciary duty, with prosecutors signaling forthcoming hearings.
United States marshals sought to serve John D Rockefeller of Standard Oil with a federal subpena. After two weeks of efforts across Chicago Cleveland New York and Boston, Rockefeller was located in Pittsfield Massachusetts and served. Officers report no evasion intent but note his unfamiliarity with the requested court appearance set for a forthcoming session.
Rear Adaura Norman Farquhar of the United States Navy died suddenly in a New York hotel on July 3 after a stroke or apoplexy. The report notes his death at the Thorn Jamestown Hotel and mentions the family and naval status in terse, period-voice phrasing.
At the Jamestown exposition, about 300 soldiers from South Carolina and Kentucky regiments rioted on the warpath at the tents and show areas. In Prestonburg today Joe Mutspatrick allegedly shot Andy Coburn three times in the back, killing him. Panic broke out as Fitzpatrick and relatives left the courthouse. Coburn had been indicted for killing a cousin of Mutspatrick. Separate items report a Atlantic Coast Line scheduling dispute and a controversial Atlantic Metiorial conference remark by Bishop Turner.
British officialdom weighs grave consequences as General Sir Harry Maclean, trusted by the sultan, is seized by Raisuli’s bandits near Rouina while bearing gifts intended to placate the renegade Moroccan chief. Raisuli demands reconstruction of the Zinat house, a 100000 pound indemnity, and Maclean’s reappointment as Tangier governor and police commandant.
About 150 prominent Atlantans at the Piedmont hotel voiced strong opposition to state prohibition. They urged local option and warned statewide bans would harm morals, property values, education, and city revenues, favoring local control and anti prohibition measures.
