First death in anthracite strike at Wilkesbarre Duryea colliery

Antonio Guiseppe, an Italian, was shot dead by a coal and iron police guard at William A coll iery Duryea after disputes over entering the stockade. Conflicting accounts describe him walking toward the stockade or attempting to breach the fence. Authorities doubled guards as about 2000 residents gathered near the mine at night while coroner investigations proceed and possible arrests loom. Meanwhile, reports from Roanoke and Bluefield say the strike wanes with miners returning to work and operators preparing for near settlement, amid ongoing detentions for intimidation and shootings.
