New York July 1 record heat tops 98 degrees at 3 10 pm with humidity 38 5 percent. Hospitals report strain but cope. Horses collapse on streets amid crowds flocking to parks and seashore. Newark hits 109. Deaths and prostrations rise across Greater New York Metropolitan area.
A severe heat spell ended as a southeast squall swept through Cincinnati on July 1 bringing 60 mph winds and a thunder shower. Temperatures fell from a daytime high near 99 to 75, but five heat deaths were reported and about a dozen people were seriously prostrated, with seventeen deaths overall from the heat since the spell began.
Extreme July heat in St Louis causes several deaths and many prostrations. Reported fatalities include John Strler, 58, John Hise, Henry Staubdr, 50, Frank Douglas, Henry Schuette, 60. Prostrations affected Darius Hberharat, 138, Patrick Rabbit, Murph, Lizzie Curboy, ages 2 and unknown.
Philadelphia and surrounding area endured extreme heat on July 1 with a government thermometer atop the post office building reaching 107 degrees. In Cramp's shipyard 5000 workers fainted or collapsed requiring relief from labor as heat sickness spread across the city.

About 200 Illinois Central employees were retired today under a pension system approved by the president and general manager.
