Quay Grips Senate as Statehood Measure Faces Obstacles

In Washington on January 2, Senator Quay tried to hold the Senate in continuous session to push the statehood bill but failed to secure a quorum. Debate centered on the Arizona refunding proposition and tied to bonds held by Elan Hird Goler, amid sharp exchanges with Beveridge and Lodge. Adjournment occurred after a tense night session plan with ongoing calls for a vote and continued discussion the next day. The House meanwhile focused on bills from the judiciary committee, including tightening the Wilson act provisions and raising federal judges' salaries, with one measure limiting free rail and telegraph travel for officials. The chamber adjourned until tomorrow.
