Charleston January 26 A dispensary constable J C Elliott nearly lynched for striking Mrs Nolte during a raid on her store. Witnesses testified Elliott appeared intoxicated and carried a badge but no warrant. Court hearing adjourned to tomorrow as armed officers surrounded courthouse.
Washington reports slow confirmations after the Senate rejected Hornblower for Supreme Court, with few nominations sent this week. Chicago January 26 George H Painter hanged at 8 04 am for the murder of his mistress Alice Martin at their South Green street rooms near Madison Street He claimed hypnotism could prove his innocence but was denied Birmingham January 26 Joseph Baily a negro convicted of murdering his wife was sentenced to be hanged The case followed another scheduled execution in the same week as the Birmingham court dealt with jealous homicide in colored circles
In Chattanooga Tennessee on January 26 James H. Lipp a young plumber and a friend escorted Miss Viola Cobleigh daughter of Dr E A Cobleigh to Squire Holtzclaws to wed. The pair married and left for Knoxville amid parental disapproval due to social prominence. Dr Cobleigh had wed at fifteen.
Nashville, January 26 Special. A horrifying murder occurred Wednesday night at the Central Asylum for the Insane seven miles from the city. Three patients, Thomas Gant Charles Collins and Elijah Puryear occupied the same apartment Collins lay dead with head crushed Gant confessed no motive and Puryear who witnessed the act said he thought Gant was playing.
A rear end collision in Henderson North Carolina injures nine in a passenger car. Reverend B. J. Shaw of Portsmouth Virginia and L Bowman of Richmond Virginia killed. W. G. Brodie of Warrenton North Carolina injured. Cause cites flagman signal failure. First fatal collision on the division in ten years.
Judge Key of the U S district court joined Judge Newman of Atlanta in the decree for the sale of the Marietta and North Georgia railroad at Atlanta. He reserved right to alter the decree if Tennessee lienholders prevail. U S Circuit Court Clerk Taylor acts as special commissioner to handle Tennessee proceeds. The Central Trust Company of New York reportedly finds the decision unsatisfactory and may appeal.
Washington reports a large withdrawal of gold from the treasury since January 11 when Carlisle invited bond bids. By January 2 the treasury had removed 2.8 million in gold for bond purchases and a total loss of 12.44 million since January 1. Bond offers continue, but amounts are unavailable, with a further 794000 withdrawn, keeping the reserve at 67.65 million while month to date revenues lag by about 10 million.
Nine miners from Mingo Mountain on the Tennessee Kentucky line were sentenced to three days in jail for contempt after refusing to vacate tenement houses amid a receivership. Deputized marshals served ejectment notices, but the men did not move, leading to arrest and a mitigated punishment with a severe lecture.

In St Paul Carlton Tarbell and his wife died from gas fumes after a disconnected air pipe caused the stove to flood their home with gas.
