Coal Producers Avow Readiness To Rectify Kicks

Pennsylvania anthracite producers independent of railroads told the Calder coal regulation committee they are willing to take steps to meet all justified consumer complaints. They argued the industry tried to distribute coal equitably and to modify prices to fit the justice department. The group said if current actions fail to satisfy concerns, they will do what is necessary as directed by the Senate committee. The statement noted prices did not rise with war costs, while production, labor, and freight costs did. Former Governor Oakley Cirtig of Maine attacked Calder bill taxation as aiding profiteers, while coal men warned of broad effects. The committee then extended the inquiry to labor influence on production costs, with a session set for tomorrow.
