Tariff Hearing Debates No Intent to Cut Rates

Washington January 2 4 Chairman Underwood of the house ways and means committee asserted there is no plan to cut duty rates so low as to harm U S business. He disputed Republican insinuations that the Democratic majority aims to disturb prosperity and noted support for maintaining competitive classifications in flax hemp and jute schedules. The committee heard testimony from manufacturers and importers on lace embroideries and related items. it noted the schedule remains highly profitable delivering over 412 million in revenue with duties above 45 percent ad valorem. Some items could be reduced to spur competition and revenue. The Manila hemp export tax was criticized as a relic of colonial policy and the refund benefits to importers were said to aid American consumers.
