Deep Slashing for the Tariff on Cotton Goods
Washington January 22 The tariff on cotton manufactures may be cut to as low as 5 percent under Underwood proposals. The House Ways and Means committee heard witnesses from southern and northern mills as it weighs a revision aimed at reducing cotton clothing costs by more than $8 million annually. Northern manufacturers advocated smaller cuts, while southern mill groups pressed for deeper reductions, arguing current rates burden consumers amid debates on revenue and economic impact.
