Fatal rail crossing death of John Alexander in Atlanta
John Alexander, an eighty two year old Atlanta resident and longtime Belwood avenue crossing watchman, died after a Southern passenger train struck a cart he was trying to shepherd to safety. The 55 year city resident and Odd Fellow had warned drivers to keep single file across the crossing, and his death follows decades of treeing lives at the Belwood crossing near Hellwood Avenue. His funeral is scheduled for 2:30 at his Luckie Street residence with Oakland Cemetery interment.

Water Bond Controversy Over Charge of Overrun Is Refuted
George W. Harrison, vice president of the Atlanta water board, asserts the board did not exceed its 1901 appropriation. He says the bond issue left a balance of 67 598 98 and 16 88 in general funds, and that paying the first pump installment from bond funds would still leave a substantial balance. Harrison explains that misstatements by Alderman Woodward misread the board’s finances and cites October 9 1900 council action authorizing a Holly Manufacturing pump at 98 277 25 with staged payments and council resolutions approving further payments and improvements for the Hemphill station.
