Washington January 21 Special Representative Joseph Bailey of Texas reviews Secretary Carlisle's bond issue and argues against using bond proceeds to redeem currency. A $140000 upgrade to improve the line is included and bondholder consent is needed. Bernhardt narrowly escapes in Paris. A Dahomeyan servant allegedly tainted her tea with laudanum but she detected the taste. In Mexico City a mail robbery costs 11400 dollars from a check payable to Martinez Aurora and Coblan of Lerdo and drawn Jan 4.
Jacksonville January 21 The Duval Athletic Club faces continuing trouble as John Kelly demands unconditional payout of the $20,000 check and absolute ringside police protection. Corbett and Mitchell back Kelly’s demand while Bowden accuses Mitchell of flunking. Governors, troops, and legal officials move to prevent or delay the planned mill with Corbett and Mitchell set for a meeting to settle the purse and transport issues.
Meyer refused to rent to the Corbett party calling them a gang of ten ants. The group occupied the house by force and Meyer demands $83 in damages or will prosecute for breaking and entering. Meyer claims he was unaware the house would be used on Saturday.
Parkville bank near Kansas City reported an attempted midnight burglary. Cashier A C Hamilton spotted intruders with burglar tools and dynamite, raised the alarm, and guards were posted on nearby bridges. Alonzo Zane was arrested crossing the Council Bluffs bridge. two robbers remain at large.
New York January 21 Lillian Russell tied the knot with John C Hatterton known as Signor Perugini at Hoboken Civil Justice Moller s residence after a brief ceremony. The couple returned to the bride s Seventy seventh street home for a lavish breakfast then to a dinner hosted by Signor Perugini where guests included Mrs Nordica and the couple will resume their stage careers at the Casino.
Savannah news reports yacht Natalie left port last Monday with arms bound for Brazilian insurgents. It carried about twelve tons of coal for a three weeks voyage. Engine repairs here boosted speed from ten to fourteen miles an hour. Vessel provisioned for three weeks, captain promised return but gave no date, hinting at another arms cargo.

General Manager Gifford says repairs will take about three months. The switchboard housed 3000 wires and was entirely destroyed.

Knoxville Tenn January 21 a Black man named Gamble attacked the eleven year old daughter of BH Francie at 3 PM. He fled but was captured and taken back to Central Jerico where he died in a mob related incident after the girl identified him.
Special Agent B. F. Stringle of the general land office found fifteen men cutting timbers on government land in Eight-mile canyon north of Florence. A large sawmill was in operation and 300000 to 400000 feet of logs, mostly shipped to Cripple Creek, were cut. Men were ordered to quit and a report will be sent to the land office.
Stephens Arkansas reports a disastrous accident at Ogamaw lumber station three miles north of town. A log train descending a trestle collapsed the structure and the locomotive and several cars fell. Three men were killed outright and many were injured as workers returning from camps were aboard.
