Profitering Probe Blocked, He Charges
Washington January 20 Today's coal industry study before the Senate committee considering the Calder regulation bill featured remarks by Henry F Thompson head of the Federal Trade Commission asserting Congress must restore competition or risk nationalization. Armand W Riley special assistant to the attorney general charged the New York Wholesale Coal Association blocked Lever Act proceedings against alleged profiteers. Riley presented Pennsylvania anthracite mine sale records showing mine month prices of 13 and 15.2 dollars per ton versus 6 dollar circular values. He declined further public testimony about the association naming Charles S Allen secretary and Gibbs L Baker counsel as key obstacles, saying publicity would hinder a New York grand jury probe. The committee adjourned to executive session and extended Calder bill hearings indefinitely.
