Prosecution Pushes Defendants in Machen Lorenz Conspiracy Trial
Washington January 18 The prosecution in the trial of August W Machen the Groff brothers and Dr and Mrs George E Lorenz for conspiracy to defraud the government called several witnesses. Yna Leibhardt Machens former stenographer testified to visits by Dr and Mrs Lorenz to Machens office but said no talk of future fastener purchases occurred. James E Bell testified the Groff fastener was adopted without a report from him though he would have filed it if the fastener had been tested in Washington. Joann F Clark described a failed 1894 test of the fastener in which Machen and Samuel A Grow were present, and Machen told Groff he would not recommend its adoption unless it worked. Justice Pritchard showed a firm stance on evidence admissibility and avoiding delays.
