Taft given hearty southern welcome as national event opens in Atlanta with officials and guests arriving for two days of ceremonies and gatherings. Local leaders extend cordial receptions and remarks highlight unity and progress.
A speech at the Capitol echoes themes of unity and progress as Taft Lau addresses concerns of Negroes, followed by a reception at Medmont and a banquet. Yeater attends both events, highlighting cross campus ties. The schedule includes remarks to two colleges and a formal reception.
The schedule lists Taft’s day with events in Piedmont tech visit student addresses at 10 am. a noon train to Athens. a 7 pm return from Athens. a 2 pm reception at the Capital City Club and a planned return to Augusta on a special train. A 9:80 time appears erroneous.
President elect Taft arrived in Atlanta after a Georgia tour and was met with warm hospitality. He laughed and smiled constantly as hosts lavished attention from Union Station to the Piedmont, praising the city’s cordial reception while noting Roosevelt bears the burden in Washington.
President-Elect William Howard Taft was feted by the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce in a landmark banquet at the new Auditorium Armory. Ministers and jurists entertained with antebellum songs and sermons, Taft declared he had been won over by the South, and the event was hailed as a non-partisan dawn of a new era in Atlanta history. The highlight included a novelty dish, posum and taters with persimmon beer, presented as a patriotic course amid Sousa’s Georgia Camp Meeting.
Charles Dupont, 23, of Apexville Tenn, is held on burglary charges after a store at 94 Whitehall Street owned by Orr Stationery and A Holzman Jeweler was broken into last night. About $1000 in jewelry and valuables were recovered, with Dupont claiming he was waiting for a confederate who escaped. Police pursued him after he was seen in an alley at 1:33 AM. the partner allegedly escaped with part of the loot. Dupont will be tried this afternoon before Recorder Broyles.
Dr. W. 5. Hikin, president of the Capital City Club, invites board members and their wives for a 4 30 pm gathering in the blue room with Judge Taft arriving at 9 pm for the main reception. Guests enter via Peachtree Street, with dressrooms and stairs noted, and a program including introductions by Dr. Wikin and supper in the ballroom. The club will feature red white and blue decorations and display American Beauty roses and Florida moss.
Denver reports ten passengers dead after a Dorsero wreck as a Denver and Rio Grande train collided near Dotsero. The crash split the chaff car and wounded and deceased were loaded for transport to Glenwood Springs. A later report listed multiple engineers and firemen among the injured.
President elect Taft told a chamber of commerce banquet that the South will be treated as an integral part of the nation not a province. He pledged to investigate candidate character and seek appointees whose standing dispels alienism and earns trust across Southern communities.
