In Columbus Georgia on January 1 United States Commissioner Brown set bonds at 1000 dollars each for O A Knighton and O F Knighton top farmers of Randolph county charged with peonage. The case to be tried at the next term marks the first peonage action in the western division of the northern district of Georgia. John S Hartsfield testified that two black workers Joe Jones and Hillard Harris were coerced into staying by threats and that the Knightons attempted to hold them until debts of about 80 dollars were settled.
