Married Women Barred from Teaching Debate Crashes in Georgia
State School Commissioner W B Merritt requested an official opinion from Attorney General John C Hart on whether county boards may prohibit married women from teaching in public schools. Hart ruled marriage is not a disqualifier and that boards cannot enact arbitrary rules excluding married women. final teacher selection rests with the county board, with eligibility based on moral and mental qualifications. The opinion supports home rule but rejects the idea that matrimony signals mental incapacity and urges to value married women as capable teachers.
