Peonage charge against two Georgia farmers
Georgia farmers G A Knighton and O F Knighton were bound over on $1000 bonds each on peonage charges. The case, filed in the northern district, marks one of the first peonage prosecutions in that division. Witnesses testified that an employer had advanced funds to hired workers who were prevented from leaving the Knightons’ farm until debts were settled. Knighton contends workers could leave but owed them about $80, with debt arrangements to be settled before departing.
