The Corwin carried no dispatches to Hawaiian representatives in America while Dole hurriedly sent his reply. The Examiner notes Liliuokalani’s death from heart disease could occur any moment and that smothering spells have increased. Visitors are prohibited as precaution and threats to her life worsen her condition.
Elizabeth Baker, a white schoolteacher from Indianapolis, ran a Black Bottom Nashville school for four years and admired Rev. C. K. Wilson. Her brother threatened to sue if they wed. Wilson denied plans to marry her. Baker insisted she would marry whom she chose, saying the Bible permits unions in the Lord.
Mexico City January 14. Lieutenant Alfredo Gomez presents a new retarded percussion shell praised by President Diaz. The four chambered design explodes only on contact with obstacles, increasing range accuracy and destructive power. Twelve models are being produced at the national arms factory for trials.
Lynchburg Virginia reports the arrest of Mrs Cora V Hendricks wife of the murdered man J H Hendricks her father J H White and John H MacMasters near Bocock Virginia with a preliminary hearing set at Campbell courthouse Tuesday. A detective has been at work on the case for weeks with evidence to be presented. Four negroes previously arrested were released after the grand jury failed to indict.
In Russell Kansas a mob of about twenty men abducted J. G. Burton and William Gay with his son John Gay from the jail and hanged all three from a small railroad bridge near the depot. The Gays protested their innocence while Burton allegedly refused to discuss the Dinning murder. Each victim was shot after hanging. Police investigations linked Burton to the July killing of Fred Dinning on the Burton’s land and subsequent body discovery. A subsequent Portland wind storm damaged chimneys and signs at fifty miles per hour.
San Augustine Texas January 14 Colonel Alexander Horton known as the Texas patriot died today two miles from here He served as a guide to General Sam Houston and was a notable figure in Texas history.
Jacksonville dispatch reports large crowds traveling to Mayport and St Augustine for training of Corbett and Mitchell. Governor Mitchell coordinates militia captains to hold men in readiness, while Corbett and Mitchell prepare to train up to the fight date. The governor shows resolve, with possible interference to prevent the public match. Mrs Corbett remains unwell but not seriously.
A Mexican conference will assemble in Mexico City this week to discuss Ward Steamship Company plans. Ward president James F. Ward and Joseph H. Ward, along with Van derbilt, travel to Vera Cruz with Mexican manager Juan Ritter and agent C F Hagan to meet a New York party. The aim is to make Tampico the chief port of entry for Ward line freight and passenger traffic on the Mexican Central railway corridor.
A committee of Santa Fe railroad workers from La Junta California informs Governor Waite that engineers conductors brakemen switchmen and trackmen on the western division have not received salaries since October. A second stranger nearly died. rescuers pulled him from the blaze unconscious. Fire started last April and has hindered railroad travel by undermining track despite efforts to extinguish.
Samuel H. Mather, 50, longtime Cleveland banker and founder of a savings society, died after a brief illness. The Mather Society for Savings began in a small room, later growing to deposits of millions, with substantial surplus and undivided profits. Mather served as secretary and treasurer and at his death was president of the bank.
Charles Willis, a Black man, was shot and seriously wounded by Thomas Petrower, a white man, on Thursday night in Roebelle Fra. Friday night unknown assailants went to Willis’s house, riddled him with buckshot, and shot the bed to ensure he could not recover. Neighbors feared the wound would prove fatal.
