The National Committee sets the venue and timing for the Democratic National Convention to be held in St. Louis on July sixth, establishing the location and schedule for the party gathering.
The Democratic national committee settled on St Louis as the site for the 1896 national convention after a harmonious meeting. New York failed to formalize funding, while Chicago offered money but St Louis provided a larger cash pledge and free use of the Coliseum. Balloting favored St Louis as the exposition city amid regional loyalties, with the decision framed as the opposite of eight years ago. Bryan arrived and mingled with delegates, planning southern lectures. The session adjourned after executive procedure and committee member arrangements.
Jacksonville on January 12 witnessed General Gordons funeral as thousands gathered to honor the slain veteran. Veterans groups and Confederate organizations led the procession while officers and troops provided the escort under mourning flags and tribute. The scene reflected deep grief among those who served with Gordons in Virginia and other fronts.
General Lovell commands brigade troops from Florida with Captain Walter J Corbett and eight Jacksonville men to accompany the body to Atlanta. Georgia state officers meet the procession in Jacksonville and six attend the Governor’s shaft. The car with the body is coupled to the Southern train bound for Atlanta, while ongoing escort duties shift as the train crosses state lines. Mrs Gordon and Mrs Burton Smith accompany the deceased widow.
The cortege to the car included Major Hugh and Frank Gordon, Rev A Fulwood, Hon S L Patterson, Captain J Faudon, and a detachment from company L state troops. Dr W oS Gramming left Miami for Atlanta. Civil escort, mayor Sewell, and board of trade delegation accompanied the funeral procession. The car was blackly taped, laurel wreaths adorned the inner compartment, and the casket rested on a taped stand with a cover.
