Moultrie Georgia January 11 Special Up to date packing plant worth a million dollars now running fulltime in a town of 6000. Hundreds of hogs killed daily, supply steady. Plant built by local business men, boosted by Black. One man sold 140 hogs for 1930 cash, beating ten cents a pound cotton. Cattle supply growing as Chicago buyers send cars weekly. Plant already sponsors branch houses in Atlanta Macon Savannah Columbus and other Georgia towns.
In London Belgian banker Emil Franqui warned 7,000,000 Belgians depend on American relief as belligerents block Antwerp trade and ports. He noted relief shipments via Rotterdam began under neutral auspices and urged mercy to prevent famine.
An immense fire broke out in Brussels, the former Belgian capital, with refugees arriving to safety at Bergen-on-Sea and reports from Nieuw Van Den Rag noting the blaze's severity and spread.
Berne January 11 Eight hundred French women and children from occupied northwestern France returned home on a special train from Germany under so called protective arrest. Repatriates say more French people remain detained and that about 700 from St Michel were taken to a detention camp in Germany.
General Carranza adopts liberal divorce provisions allowing absolute divorce by mutual consent and under specific grounds, with remarriage rights. The decree reduces barriers, sets conditions for three years cohabitation for mutual consent, and defines abandonment and support rules largely favoring wives, aiming to uplift lower and middle class women.
Washington January 11 After forty seven years of litigation between the government and Gaspard Theurer and his heirs of New Orleans over fifty barrels of whisky the supreme court declined to review the decision of the fifth circuit court of appeal that the contest had ended by Theurer's death In 1867 the government began to condemn the whisky as removed illegally from a distillery Theurer never docketed his appeal and the government forgot the cause for thirty five years then sought to revive the suit against Theurer's heirs Renting an Underwood Typewriter a sound investment.
London reports say Sir John French directed British Army operations from a home near Hyde Park during a three day London visit. He communicated directly with Sir Archibald Murray at St Omer, rode incognito aboard a channel boat, and was welcomed in Folkestone and Calais before a final remark that it would be his last visit to London until the war’s end.
