Waves Struck New York and La Bavole in Severe Atlantic Gale
The American Line steamer New York arrived from Southampton followed minutes later by the French steamer La Bavole as fierce northerly gales lashed both ships. A sailor, Camulisch, was swept to his death after slipping from a life buoy. Second Officer Keys made a dangerous dive to assist and saved the buoy, then hauled aboard. The New York carried $1,045,000 in specie. La Savoie endured a bulkhead blow below the bridge, flooding the smoking room but causing no injuries. Passengers included Santos Dumont and Countess Pappenheim members aboard.
