Georgia Farm Plan Urges Self-Sufficiency in 1921

Andrew M. Soule, president of the State College of Agriculture, lays out a 1921 program urging Georgia to expand production and marketing to raise at least 65 million dollars in value. The plan calls for crops like corn, velvet beans, wheat, oats, hay, sweet potatoes, peanuts, soybeans, Irish potatoes, and tobacco, plus dairying, poultry, and home orchards to cut imports, stabilize prices, and keep wealth within the state. It emphasizes market facilities, county agents, and farm bureau cooperation to boost home consumption and reduce outside purchases.

Georgia Farmers Urged to Diversify and Build Pastures

The 1921 outlook advises Georgia farmers to expand permanent pastures for beef and dairy, boost hog curing at home, and diversify away from cotton. It stresses purebred stock, defined grazing plans, and efficient use of resources to stabilize income, with emphasis on soil fertility, proper farm records, and balanced crop rotation amid boll weevil impacts.
