Indicted manager surrenders in turf betting case
Charlie Jones, manager of the Ponce De Leon Commission Company, surrendered to the sheriff after a grand jury indictment on maintaining a gaming house. He posted a 500 dollar cash bond and the case aims to close the commission as a turf exchange. Solicitor C D Hill will press for court action to shut the business. The defense contends bets are telegraphed to tracks and no money changes hands. The case is set for trial next week with potential supreme court review.
