Driggs Convicted in Bribery Case Seeks Mercy
New York January 7 jury after 46 minutes convicts former Congressman Edmund H Driggs of taking money to influence a government contract while in office. Jury recommends mercy. Judge Thomas calls the act a serious violation but says Driggs acted unwittingly. Punishment could be two years in prison and a 10000 fine. Driggs admitted placing 250 machines in postoffice departments and taking 12500 from the cashier company. He also gave 2800 to Beavers, a postoffice superintendent, admitted as campaign funds. Bribery indictments also reported in Iowa. Perry Heath summoned in Salt Lake City as former Rural Delivery head faces government suit. Heath left Denver and appeared in Marshals office.
