Admiral Stanford warns Mare Island yard may be shut for dreadnoughts
Rear Admiral HW Stanford told the House Naval Committee that Mare Island strait cannot reliably admit 18 inch guns and that ships must be moved to other bays. He urged locating facilities elsewhere and suggested closing Mare Island to ship construction while noting New York, Norfolk, and Bremerton sites are available or under construction. Admiral Stanford warned keels for Pacific coast battleships could be delayed to 1927 without immediate funding to expand Mare Island equipment. He added Massachusetts plans a dock and cited Union Iron Works at Hunters Point and Balboa Dock as alternatives. He is to testify again tomorrow.
