Women Flock to Hippodrome Meeting Sparks Stampede
New York January 5. A mass meeting of the International Ladies Garment Workers drew over a thousand attendees and about 6 000 inside. Several women were knocked down as a rush formed at entrances after word spread of empty seats. Speakers urged women to join the tailors strike said to involve more than 104 000 workers. A strike vote is planned early this week. Among onlookers were suffragists Mrs C H P Belment Miss Ix Milholland and Mrs J B Milholland. Panken claimed a 40 000 wage strike would aid women's suffrage more than politicians do. The U S Manufacturers and Merchants association formed a committee to meet garment leaders to seek a settlement. Strikers would return to work if wage gains of 10 percent are granted, though employers favored the higher pay but would not recognize the union.
