Probation System Changes Urged by Judge Johnson
Recorder George E. Johnson filed his annual report, noting only 29 more cases docketed in police court in the last year, with totals just over 16,000. He urged probation system improvements, an auto for the contempt officer, an examining board for auto chauffeurs, and a farm for delinquent drinkers. The report compares crimes bound over to state courts in 1915 and 1916, including murders, burglaries, robberies, and larcenies, and cites increased arrests for drunkenness and activities in the matron’s ward. Chief Newport A. Sanford’s detectives recovered property valued at $59,693.72 and answered citizen calls, with 1,694 arrests and 3,292 calls for assistance.
