Trolley Line to Macon Delayed. Tax on Freight Receipts Up
A city committee agreed to extend the Macon trolley line construction by twelve months with a condition that if work starts in Atlanta before April 1 the new freight tax is not enforced. Alderman Quillian proposed a 2 percent tax on one fifth of gross freight receipts, rising to 5 percent after three years, a tenfold increase over the original rate. Georgia Securities Company officials, led by W J Massee and W J Kincaid, said funding is in place and a Macon to Griffin route could begin by April, with cars reaching Griffin in months and entering Atlanta via Fraser Street. The plan anticipates suburban lines extending outward and a 250,000 population in twenty years.
