Statewide races heat up in Florida primaries with many candidates
Tallahassee February 24 A Florida primary picture forms with two declared U S Senate candidates Senator S B Mallory of Pensacola and Senator Wilkinson Call of Wiltsinson. Rumors place Congressman Sparkman of Tampa as a possible entrant if he pursues the upper house seat. Frank Adams of Jasper may seek reelection to the state senate. The first district may see Sparkman run again or alternatives like Robert McNamee of St Petersburg or W K Zewadski of Ocala. In the second district Robert W Davis is expected to run unopposed, while the new third district features Lamar versus Beard with talk of a dark horse. For Secretary of State H Clay Crawford is the lone declared candidate to fill Crawford’s term, with others likely. State Comptroller A Church Croom is expected to run, with little opposition. Supreme Court vacancies may prompt several bids, including W A Dover and W B Young. Two railroad commissioners’ seats will be filled, with Day likely reelected and candidates Ward, Baker, Burr vying for the other seat. Public sentiment favors Day’s reelection. The primary will also determine nominees for county offices and the state senate.
