On the opening day of the Cooper Sharp trial in Tempe a dramatic scene unfolded as Mrs. Carmack, widow of slain editor EB W Carmack, fainted and was helped to the stand while Mrs Eastman, a star witness, re enacted the tragedy. Washington February 16 Taft said Knox is legally eligible to become secretary of state and will head the Taft cabinet. He and Knox held two conferences, Roosevelts cordial conduct noted as engineers endorsed Panama canal procedure. Taft and Roosevelt exchanged friendly remarks as plans for future meetings were made. Mrs Taft to travel to New York and Taft to Cincinnati later today.
Washington February 1 The famed Confederate nurse Miss Virginia Mason died at her Georgetown home from complications of old age. She was ninety three. During the Richmond era she led the Georgia division at Camp Winder with about 200 men under care. She pledged to aid applicants fearing death to redeem their pledge after the war. She descended from a famed Virginia family of Manos.
Middletown N Y February 16 Spe cially Through Attorneys H W and Russel Wie gins Hubert R Boyce a prominent and wealthy citizen of this place has filed suit for divorce against Mrs Dr George Brown of Atlanta. The case will be tried at the next term for court in Orange county. Brown was Mrs Avis Col din Martin of Atlanta, married in New York City November 28 1904. They lived in Middletown until July 1905 when she returned to Atlanta and soon after instituted divorce proceedings after being granted a divorce decree in Filton county Georgia she married Dr George Brown January 28 1906. It is understood the suit arises from conflicting provisions of the divorce laws of the two states. Under Georgia law Mrs Brown was free to marry Dr Brown, but under New York construction Boyce is not free of his bonds. He has brought suit to prevent a possible tangled claim to his property.
In February a man about 40 entered Lawrence M. Jones's home, demanded 7000 dollars with a dynamite bomb. Jones overpowered him with a ruse, called police, and the intruder Garnett was arrested. The bomber planned to imprison Jones and escape with the money, but was foiled and jailed.
F H Harriman arrived in Houston with a party and left for San Antonio for several weeks. He plans no Texas projects unless essential, though large sums may be spent. He says hostile legislation harmed railhead interests and kept capital out of the area.
Directors of the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce convened at 5 o’clock to approve building readiness for an upcoming automobile show. Prominent dealers formed the Atlanta Automobile Trade Association and appointed subcommittees to recruit members, consult retailers on Whitehall and Peachtree, and finalize plans for a spring show showcasing Atlanta spirit and South’s automotive interests.
