Cairo Alabama February 16 Glas cock a farmer braved a blizzard in shirt sleeves for over an hour to save one hundred passengers on the Cleveland Cincinnati Chicago and St. Louis line. He spotted a broken rail on a 40 foot embankment and ran along the track to flag a southbound train using his canvas coat as a flag, enduring zero weather to warn the danger and ensure the car’s safety.
About six thousand people crowded the Chicago auditorium for a labor union demonstration honoring John Mitchell, president of the United Mine Workers. Mitchell praised cooperation with capital, urged lawful action, and contrasted Roosevelt’s anthracite settlement with earlier rail disruptions, urging unity and adherence to law.

Freight train No 17 of the Charleston and Western Carolina railway wrecked at Madden after rails spread. Conductor Verdery and Flagman Russell of Augusta were seriously injured. The 18 car train, 14 loaded, left Greenwood at 5 50 this afternoon. Nine cars overturned as cars left the track. Engineer Dimmocks of Augusta operated the engine.
A northbound Frisco passenger train wrecked near Girard Kansas injuring five passengers all from Pittsburg Kansas. The list includes James Bridges Dr J W Porter Harry Bousfield a National Mine Workers board member James Turner and J P McNaughton. The injuries are believed potentially fatal. The incident occurred February 16.
