Democrats condemn the act as an outrage.
Dispatch from Rio de Janeiro dated February 1 reports Admiral de Gama leading a bold assault at Nictheroy, wounding arm and neck but not fatally. Government forces, including 1000 troops and boats, defend Cobras island and Fort Valegaignon with heavy losses on both sides.
Kiel February 16 A boiler explosion today on the cruiser Brandenburg caused instant death to forty-one men and fatally wounded nine others. Three chief engineers were among the dead, with several other officers injured. The vessel, unable to move, sent distress signals and was towed back to Wiel for aid as officials withheld full details.
General Jubal Marly slipped on stone steps at the Lynchburg post office yesterday afternoon and sprained his back. He was severely stunned but after being carried home he rallied. Dr. Terrell says he is not badly hurt and will be out in a few days. For months past the old war horse

Nashville February 16. Locomotive engineers meet President J W Thomas of the Nashville Chattanooga and St. Louis railway in a lengthy conference over the 1891 contract. With February 28 approaching, they draft a new agreement as wage reductions last December are not fully restored. Both sides expect to finalize tomorrow with no strike. Committees for trainmen conductors switchmen and firemen remain to confer after the engineers.
Charleston, Feb 16. Whisky raiders seized a grocery store safe at A Schultz’s premises after a thorough search including a bedroom. Police failed to open the locked burglar safe and left a seal. The next day burglars breached the seal but did not attempt entry. Governor Tillman may order troops again.
Paris February 16 anarchists, after Henry the bomb thrower’s arrest, raided his Belleville lodgings burning papers and taking bombs or bomb-making materials. Police found chlorate powder, nitric acid, and copper tubes in the rooms. Residents identified a photo of Henry as a man known as DuBois.
Lat ham Alexander & Co. sold Blair & Co. $600,000 of 4 1 5 per cent Tennessee bonds at par and accrued interest. The bonds, authorized to fund the state penitentiary, enable calling in all outstanding 5 and 6 per cent Tennessee bonds and refunding them at a lower rate in new issues.
Governor Tillman asked Attorney General Buchanen whether constables may seize contraband liquors without warrants. Buchanen replies that only unreasonable searches without warrants are forbidden. powers permitted by law are valid. He argues dispensary act applies established legal principles and does not infringe citizens liberty, warning unrestrained action equates to license and anarchy.
Nearly two hundred Charlotte leaders attended a banquet at the Central hotel for medical editors visiting the south as guests of the Seaboard Air Line. Dr W C Wile of Danbury Conn chaired the visiting physicians who will tour Athens and Atlanta and visit Raleigh Wilmington and other southern cities. New York February 16 R G Dun & Co weekly trade review says the week brought record low prices in wheat and silver with widespread firming soon after. Despite large grain movements and weak stock markets, there is no major failure, yet cotton and woolen goods suffer. iron and steel show a slight recovery while demand remains uneven across regions and sectors.
Improved groceries and plantation supplies are noted as Atlanta, Chattanooga, Savannah, and Augusta report rising volumes in naval stores, cotton manufactures, and staples. Birmingham shows some improvement while New Orleans remains weaker. Galveston reports fairly active trade in leading lines.
The trial of the Skelton brothers in Alabama courts grows sensational as the defense reads letters Ross Skelton wrote to his sister Miss Annia Skelton of Little Rock. The letters reveal endearing terms and promises, amid abductions and misdirections surrounding events from Memphis to Cincinnati. The defense plans further letters to show Ros was not her seducer and name a Birmingham official as the real man. A Detroit fire and insurance note follows.
Detroit February 16 Flames issued from the third story of the wholesale drug house Farrand Williams Clark at 2 and 4 Woodward avenue. Heavy snow drifts and tangled telegraph and trolley wires delayed the department, flames spread to five stores. Fire under control at 8. Loss to stock about 140000, insured around 125000. Building loss and insurance not shown.
Selma Alabama February 16 Special Yesterday afternoon while Mrs Jessie Rucker was at her home near Stanton a little station about forty miles from Selma two negroes entered her home and assaulted her The two were caught today carried near the scene of the crime swung to a tree and riddled with bullets Later reports are that the unfortunate lady is dead.
In Tuskaloosa Alabama on February 16 Davis Wright and Lon Thompson, a state hospital worker, failed to return after being seen at a local home. They had just been paid and authorities suspect robbery or possible murder. The area is being searched but no trace has been found.
The side-wheel iron steamer Ida was burned to the waterline near Baltimore on February 16. The hull took on water and the vessel settled, blocking the port route between Locust Point and Deake Lay. Loss estimated in the hundreds of dollars.
