Evans Now Head of Second Brigade Amid Army Reorganization

By army reorganization the department of the Gulf was abolished and the second brigade formed with headquarters in Atlanta. Brigadier General R. K. Evans now commands a force that has shrunk from about 5,499 to under 2,000 troops within the brigade, including elements of the seventeenth and mint infantry and portions of fortifications at Fort Mison Fort Thomas Fort Sugar, and coastal defenses from Fort Nog to Fort Crockett Texas. The second brigade reports directly to central division headquarters at Governor's Island New York rather than Atlanta, placing Evans’ infantry command closer to his troops and anticipating a reduction in cavalry and artillery roles as the reorganization proceeds. General Evans is expected home Sunday for inspection of artillery posts along the coast.
