Farm Product Imports Into The United States
The 1907 farm product imports reached a record value near 6 million dollars, with 1908 at about 540 million dollars. The five year average (1901-1905) was just over 455 million. Imports split into two classes: those competing with U.S. farm products and those that do not. The first class includes sugar, tobacco, hay, hides, and skins. the second includes silk, coffee, tea, sisal, Manila fiber, jute, bananas, coconuts, and certain cotton. Since 1900, farm products rose, but imports of manufactures grew faster, leaving about 48 percent of total imports agricultural. Per capita import value rose from 2.71 in 1861-65 to 6.67 in 1901-1906, with gains across silk, packing-house products, fibers, coffee, wool, tobacco, fruits, cacao, and oils.
