Local phone service in good working order storm disrupts regional lines

A severe fleet storm disrupted telegraph service for two companies and impaired long distance telephone service. Western Union lines south of Atlanta were down and Birmingham’s Postal wire struggled all day. Local within Atlanta remained largely intact as repair crews worked to restore out of town connections toward Birmingham Montgomery and Macon. North of Atlanta services held well with westbound links to New York Baltimore and Washington reported clear. Repair teams active throughout the day and expected improvements by morning.
