Brown Stands Firm Amidst Panic in Cotton Market

Brown, leading bears, faced a riotlike floor as vast supplies dumped, then Brown urged brokers to curb sales and rallied prices. Daniel Sully predicted a rebound as long traders and locals absorbed the liquidation, with Wall Street buyers remaining active later.

Columbia February 6 Special An admirer tells how H A Williams rose from freight brakeman on the Columbia and Greenville line to become superintendent of the Savannah division of the Southern Railway succeeding P I Welles. He began on the old line with his father Captain Naton Williams as conductor, hiding at meeting points to avoid his father’s thrashing. Williams rose to trainmaster in Columbia for the Columbia and Greenville and the Charlotte Columbia and Augusta lines, later serving as superintendent over his father on the Abbeville branch. Now he returns to Savannah division as superintendent over the same family line. He currently runs daily trips between Hodges and Abbeville on the Southern railway’s Abbeville branch.
