Carnegie Steel wins judgment in railways debt case
Justice Harlan sides with Carnegie Steel in a suit over 123000 owed by the Richmond and Darville line to creditors of insolvent railroads. After receivers, a mortgage foreclosure by Central Trust, and transfers, the Supreme Court reviews preferential claims. The matter centers on whether Carnegie qualifies as a creditor with priority amid complex bankruptcy procedures. The Chicago Great Western opens a Philadelphia passenger agency, with J W Cule and J A Darby in charge. Charles H Chappell, a receiver figure for several roads, cautions about taking the Pittsburgh and Gulf presidency, noting substantial work remains and a younger man might be better suited.
