In St Louis on February 3 Rev Dr Edwin H Richards a Ugandan missionary told the Laymen's Evangelical Convention that the negro did not originate from Ham nor is he outside the Adamic line. He asserted the black race is co Adamaic and descends from one of Adams probable brothers.
Bridgeport resident David S. Keach proposes a municipal life insurance scheme to fund city debt. He offers to insure for a large sum and have the city pay premiums for benefits upon his death, in exchange for a monument honoring him as originator of municipal life insurance.
Naval court martial arguments center on Paymaster Auld and Dr Cowles over Miss Dorothy Hester of Evanston. Major Gatlin condemns Auld's overstepping authority while Major Leonard emphasizes protecting a naval officer’s offer to defend her honor. If findings go against Auld, appeal to Secretary Meyer is anticipated. Auld’s father vows to spend freely to defend him.
Washington February 4 special. Daniel C. Roper reports on the 1909 cotton supply and demand showing Europe still reeling from the 1907 crisis while U.S. exports to Europe and other lands reach about two thirds of the crop. Savannah ranks third in bale exports and has receipts surpassing a million and a half, with total U.S. shipments to the United Kingdom exceeding three and a half million bales in 1909 due to England’s shipping efficiency.
The report notes about 160 000 bales of foreign cotton, mainly Egyptian, used by U S mills. Four reasons are given for Egyptian cottons high usage including finish quality, luster and dye uptake, state of color used without dye, and strength for sewing threads. It cites linters from seed as a growing byproduct and highlights rising southern cotton textile growth since 1840.
An 1908 letter praises Eckman’s Alterative as a cure for consumption while condemning proprietary remedies as unethical. The writer claims personal recovery from tuberculosis after using the product and urges readers to seek the booklet of cured cases. The affidavit from Arthur Webb accompanies the endorsement.
The report notes 2,551,737 bales produced in 1808-09 and records rapid expansion with new spindles in the south surpassing 1840 totals. In 1870 New England used ten times less cotton than the cotton-growing states, while the south shipped 400,000 more bales than New England by August 31, 1909. Roper highlights the south's rise to industrial prominence in cotton.
Macon civic leaders meet at Cecil Morgan home on College Street to form a non salary park commission. The group plans to beautify public spaces in Central City, funded annually by city government. T. In Toledo Ohio Thomas L Lewie president of the miners and acting as temporary chairman of the joint wage scale conference of Ohio Indiana and Pennsylvania district expressed hope for an amicable adjustment. After preliminary business the conference adjourned until tomorrow morning. Lewin urged repeal of anti conspiracy laws saying they threaten operators and deter investment while workers gain safety from collaboration.
Frederick Weyerhauser resigns as a director of the First National Bank of Chippewa Falls Wisconsin and plans retirement from the directorates of about thirty banks in the northwest. The move signals a gradual stepping back from active business operations.
A blind man appeals to the city tax committee for a reduced license after his guide dog Racker dies from pneumonia. He refuses a free license, saying he can pay something. He recalls training the stray dog into a guide and laments losing the faithful helper who aided his work on the viaduct.
