Roosevelt Seen as Inevitable McKinley LVP Choice
Washington dispatch reports Republican leaders in Congress view Governor Roosevelt as the likely vice presidential nominee with President McKinley. Senator Lodge notes Roosevelt’s strong West support, New York’s desire for second place, and signs of New York Republicans preparing to yield to the Roosevelt inevitability despite some backing for Woodruff and other figures. The piece also covers reform efforts in the consular service led by Lodge, facing limited backing from state business groups. A delegation from Ohio is mentioned later in the text.
