Washington February 2 Special The House banking and currency committee votes to repeal the 10 percent tax on state banks nine to eight amid maneuvers by Mr Warner and Mr Cox. The measure aims for an unconditional repeal, with Speaker Crisp pressing for a direct vote. In the Senate the tariff bill moves forward with debate and amendments anticipated, while Quay proposes a broader silver-buying plan.
A protest from the International Cigar Makers Union of Chicago against Cuban cigar makers entering via Key West Florida has reached the treasury department. W H Seel was tried in Columbia for running a blind tiger. Assistant AG Barber and Solicitor Nelson led the state defense by Judge Melton and Judge Crawford. Only witness Miller testified that Seel sold whisky. Jurors voir directed. one Negro juror denied relation to the affidavit swearer Constable Bruns on. After about fifteen minutes the jury returned a verdict of not guilty.
