Syphon limits for long distance water lifting explained

In this farm correspondence the writer asks about raising water 200 yards and 48 feet by syphon and 1 inch pipe. The answer states a siphon requires lower outlet than source and a vertical head under about 30 feet. siphons can only lift to lower vessels, not higher. Flooding with a gasoline or hot air pump could work, but best is securing a 6 foot head from spring to a hydrant or reservoir, with details mailed to H J Patterson for guidance.
